Yay! It’s time for new year’s resolutions. But, according to US News, 80% of resolutions fail. At Bracket Labs—makers of TaskRay, the 100% Salesforce native project management solution—we don’t think this has to be an inevitability. Keeping resolutions and reaching goals just involves a little, well, project management.
Here are five ideas to help you get more done this year:
1. Be realistic
When making resolutions or setting goals, we often shoot for the stars. But we’re all much better off setting goals that have some chance of being achieved. Sometimes this will mean setting goals in phases. Other times, it will mean not getting everything you want exactly the way you want it. (But, hey, something is better than nothing!) For work goals, it’s also a good idea to share them with your boss or your team to get them on board (no point in setting a goal that doesn’t have buy in from the right people).
2. Create a plan (and check in often)
Seems obvious, but if you don’t develop—and work—an actionable plan, nothing will get done. One of the best ways to set down a plan is to break down goals, even personal ones, into projects. Turning your goals into projects with milestones, tasks, and due dates will keep things organized and in view.
3. Keep it simple
Avoid getting too granular when mapping out your plan. This will help you stay on track and prevent you from getting overwhelmed.
4. Get others involved
Involving other people can not only create accountability, it can also lighten the load. What tasks can you ask someone else to handle? Just think how much faster you can reach your goals if you divide and conquer.
5. Accept failure
Borrow this tip from the practice of mindful meditation: Distracted? Start again. And again. And again. Roadblocks are part of life. Don’t give up and don’t get caught up in blaming yourself for why things aren’t happening the way you think they should be. The faster you get back to business, the quicker you will succeed.
Here’s to a successful and fulfilling 2018!
